It all began in 1940, when lifelong friends Abdel Ghany Rawach and Mario Matta  stumbled upon a dimly lit cellar beneath a quiet London street. With the world in chaos above, they dreamed of creating a refuge below , a place where laughter, stories, and music could drown out the noise of war. That cellar became The Undertone.

By candlelight and the hum of a borrowed gramophone, soldiers, artists, and wanderers alike gathered here. Mario poured the pints, Abdel Ghany tuned the guitars, and together they built more than a pub, they built a family.

Decades later, Marianne Matta Carucci and Leïna Rawach, their granddaughters, carry that same flame. Still true to its roots, The Undertone has evolved into a celebration of London’s vibrant pop and rock culture — where freedom, rhythm, and friendship meet under one roof.
